5 Ways To Avoid Absorbing Other People’s Energy

Today, absorbing other people’s energy is easy to do. Everyone gives off vibes; from social media, the news, face-to-face contact, and even through television, the world is buzzing with energy.

If you often find yourself energetically taking on the problems and emotions of others, you’re probably an empath or a sensitive soul.

Empaths and sensitive souls often pick up on the energies, emotions, and “vibes” of others the most. While this can be a great trait to build strong connections, too much empathy or sensitivity can lead to auric vulnerability. It’s important to know how to switch this off sometimes – by using the 5 techniques below, you’ll be on the path of energetic protection in no time.

  • Stay (or Get) Grounded

You can achieve this through meditation, yoga, and even just resting when needed. It’s especially important for empaths to “take breaks” from life; no social media, other people, or outside distractions. Usually, sitting with a candle and peaceful, beautiful music is best.

  • Ask Yourself What You’re Feeling

Ask yourself if what you’re feeling is “your” emotion, or if it feels external. Many empaths and sensitives often take on the roles of others when they are too attached, so you will likely be able to pinpoint if the energy resonates with you personally or not.

  • Find Where You End, and They Begin

If you spend too much time with someone (a coworker, family member, spouse, friend, and so on), it’s natural to mirror their personality or behavior in subtle ways. However, taking on their energies and issues is when it becomes a problem. Make sure you take time for yourself every day to relax, refresh, and nourish.

  • Meditation

In a peaceful and quiet place, sit or lay down, and close your eyes. Take a deep breath, and imagine (or feel) where the absorbed energy is. Is it in your heart, mind, chest, or somewhere else? Imagine this energy gently leaving your body in a cloud-like state, and evaporating into thin air. Or, if you’d prefer to turn it into something positive, imagine this cloud bursting into glittering, healing light for others, vibrant energy, or a blessing for someone you love. Put up your energetic boundaries (see below on how to do so), and wish whoever’s energy you had absorbed well on their way.

  • Create Energetic Boundaries

This can be achieved through meditation and visualization. This, this, and this are some of my personal favorites.

These tips and techniques will help to shield and protect you from becoming overly attached or too energetically vulnerable. Remember: feeling the hardships and pains of others is an incredible ability that can lead to deeper connection and interpersonal bonds, but it’s not your job to bear the weight of the world.

Through finding yourself, discerning what you’re feeling, staying grounded, and creating boundaries, you can actually become more connected with others around you through detachment; where you are able to provide active listening, an open heart, and – most importantly – unconditional love.

As Aletheia Luna wisely said, “Create boundaries. Honor your limits. Say no. Take a break. Let go. Stay grounded. Nurture your body. Love your vulnerability. And if all else fails, breathe deeply.
